Bec recently got back from a festival (or ‘doof’ as we say here in Australia) and gave Peter the challenge of recreating one of the photos taken at the festival. The inspiration photo was shot with natural midday sunlight, which was quite a challenge for Peter to recreate in the studio on an overcast day.
This tutorial with Peter and RaRa was shot to show you how these two awesome people work together, giving you a fly-on-the-wall perspective rather than Peter explaining every step of his process. It was a sunny summer day and we wen up to the abandoned Olinda golf course, the light didn’t change much so Peter could really focus on nailing the shot rather than his technical settings.
Welcome to our studio as you experience one of Peter’s creative shoots with model Cristina Garces. Peter and Cristina have worked together a few times prior, but this was the first time they have shot together at Peter’s studio. Starting off the tutorials with an Interview, the tutorials continue on to show you the WHOLE shoot, finished off with 3 retouches!
Peter and model Rhiannon (or RaRa as we call her) have been working together for years and recently collaborated with her friend Daniel P for an editorial shoot. As Peter explains in the first video, he prefers to not ‘collaborate’ on shoots as it often ends up with the MUA or sylist taking over the shoot. Peter and Daniel had never worked together, and you will see how different their tastes are as they move through the shoot. This is followed by a retouching tutorial.
In this tutorial, Layla came back to the studio for another shoot with Peter to build on her portfolio. The inspiration photos she picked out were all shoot outside so Peter had to work to create lighting that looked like sunlight.

We are finally on the tail end out of lockdown in Melbourne! So the amazing Rhiannon (RaRa) dropped past the studio to have a play. In these tutorials, you will see how Peter works in the studio for all his ‘play’ shoots – the model will pick out some reference photos from Peter’s inspiration folder, and then he will work from there to build the lighting which in this case was just natural lighting, with Peter shaping it using reflectors or changing walls and angles.

Julia Yaroshenko is a Ukrainian freelance travelling model. Peter and I have known her iconic face for a while (always on 500px and even some photographers in the Peter Coulson Community), and were very excited when Julia e-mailed us letting us know of her travels to Melbourne.
These tutorials are a fly-on-the-wall, start to end of our photoshoot, interview & retouching.
As Peter continues to train Lottie, she came to the studi for her third shoot with an idea she wanted to do a shoot with rollers in her hair. This sparked a cencedpt Peter has had for some time now with an old fashioned hair dryer, so the two of them collaboraed to create soething a little out of the box!
